Can Our Present Good karma clear our Past Bad Karma?

Can Our Present Good karma clear our Past Bad Karma?

A Girl devotee asked like this:

“Prabhuji. .by being good and honest .helpful. can it cut our previous bad karmas”

REPLY:

It was my initial years after I started to attend ISKCON’s sathsangha. I had not read all the books of Srila Prabhupada then.

One day, H.H.Bakthi Vikas Swami was delivering a class. The topic was mostly about karma.

I asked the same question asked by you to him.

(ABORTION IS A SIN AND KARMA FOR PARENTS AND DOCTORS! HOW? READ HERE!)

He replied that it is not possible to clear the Past bad karma by doing good karma.

We will get the good reactions because of our present good karma. At the same time, we will face the negative reactions for our past bad karma too.  Both will exist.

This question can be understood with an example:

I stop the marriage of a person and his life is severely affected because of my action against him.  Then, I realize that I have done wrong. So, I gift him money liberally and make him happy.

Though he feels happy, this monetary help can not clear your bad karma of affecting his marriage. You should suffer for affecting his marriage and you will also be blessed with comforts for helping him.

But, if you do the same monetary service to Krishna and pray for forgiveness for your past karma, there are chances for getting relieved from our past negative karma if Krishna is pleased with your reformation.

Since you should not get demotivated to perform good karma, let me write a few more words.

Because of our past bad karma, we are suffering in this world.  Though we can not wipe off those bad karma by doing good karma, we can stop adding more bad karma and avoid the severity of the reactions.

When we reform and stop bad acts, we get the mercy of Krishna and hence the severity of the reactions of our past negative karma will come down.

So, atleast to avoid further addition of bad karma, we should do only good karma.

However, even these good karma can give further birth with a comfortable life and also a life in heavenly planets.

Only if we totally stop adding new karma, whether it is good or bad, we can stop further births.

So, we have to stop adding any karma and take another step to clear past karma.

What to do for that?

Surrender to Krishna and work for Krishna. Dedicate all your duties to Krishna.

If you work for your pleasure and needs, you will be adding either good karma or bad karma.

But, if you work for the pleasure of Krishna, then, you will not add any karma, but, you will be purified from all the past karmic reactions.

When you detach from the material affairs and hold Krishna strongly, even all your past karmic reactions can get wiped off.

So, to clear all past karmic reactions and adding new karma, there is only one way:

Surrender to Krishna;  Work for Krishna;  Dedicate your actions to Krishna;  Be just as an instrument in the hands of Krishna;  Be materially detached.

This is the simple formula.  This will definitely deal with all your karmic reactions successfully.
