10 FOODS KRISHNA DEVOTEES SHOULD EAT AND AVOID!

10 FOODS KRISHNA DEVOTEES SHOULD EAT AND AVOID!

A devotee is advised to avoid certain food stuffs just to keep his guna suitable to follow devotion.  If others say any others say any other reason or stories, they are just exaggerations.

Food affects our guna and hence consciousness.  There is no doubt in it.  So, such regulative advices.

FOODS TO BE AVOIDED BY THE DEVOTEES

(1) NON VEGETARIAN FOODS:

Flesh has the sin of killing an animal for developing our body.  The animals are the foods meant for wild animals, not for men.  And, they have more “animal fat” that enhances thamo and rajo guna.  So, you can not concentrate in devotional practices and body control properly.  So, avoid non veg foods SUCH AS MEAT, CHICKEN, FISH AND EGGS. How? READ HERE.

(2) ONION AND GARLIC:

Just eating onion and garlic is not sinful. But, they may induce our body to commit sinful acts.  How?

If you like to grow in devotion, you need the domination of satva guna.  But, onion and garlic contain a compound ALLICIN that dilutes your blood and thus makes your blood circulation faster and hence your body will become dominated with rajo guna that makes our nerves excessively active. So, when chance comes, we may slip into committing offences and self control may come down. So, better to avoid onion and garlic.

(3) COFFEE & TEA:

Coffee and tea contain a compound COFFEINE that is an additive compound that induces us to take them every day or in more frequency at a particular time.  If we do not take, we may become nervous.  So, our devotional practices will be controlled by that compound COFFEINE that makes us nervous causing barriers for our devotional growth.

(4) CHOCOLATES & COCOA DRINKS:

These products also contain coffeine that causes the same effects mentioned above.

(5)  BOTTLED COOL DRINKS:

These bottled drinks also contain some compounds including coffeine, sacharin, that makes us addicts to drink them.  So, they will control our devotional schedules.

(6) BAKERY CAKES, SNACKS, BISCUITS, etc.:

Most of the bakeries use eggs in cakes, biscuits, etc.  So, better to be avoided.  As far as branded popular biscuits, they too may have some traces of coffeine.  So, better to avoid them without ascertaining their contents.

However, if any biscuit is known NOT TO CONTAIN coffeine, animal calcium, animal vitamins, egg, etc, you can take them, but, finding them is very difficult for us.  In ISKCON kitchens and shops like HIGHER TASTE hotels, very delicious cakes, biscuits, creams, herbal teas, etc, are provided and they do not contain any prohibited items. If possible, you can purchase and use them.  Or, you yourself can prepare such cakes and biscuits in your home, offer them to Lord and then take them.

(7) PIZZA, BURGER, CHOCO CREAMS, ETC:

As far as Pizza and burger are concerned, they are not additive, but, they too enhance rajo and thamo guna because of the presence of excessive sweetness.  Sweetness beyond a limit will enhance thamo guna. They may also have some prohibited food items as we can not ascertain their contents.

So, first avoid the friends who encourage you to take pizza and burger.  Take alternative forms of sweets like coconut cakes, groundnut cakes, etc in limited quantity.  Since the food purchased from bakeries can not be offered to Krishna, you can not offer pizzas, burgers also.  So, take a resolution that you will not touch any item that can not be offered to Krishna.

If you are sufficiently loveful to Krishna, you will be ready for sacrefices.  So, if you like to love Krishna sincerely, you should bring down your attachments with such material attractions like pizza.

So, develop your love more on Krishna.  More love will reduce your attachments with such products.

When a girl or boy is ready to wait even for 2-3 hours to meet their lovers, can’t you sacrifice pizza, burger, etc to gain the love of the topmost authority Krishna?

When you sacrifice your material attachments, Krishna comes very closer to you.

Believe this 1000%.

These thoughts will help you to be away from unnecessary things in life.

(8) EATING IN HOTELS AND JUNK FOODS:

The food carries the consciousness of the cook.  So, the negative consciousness of the cook may transfer through the food to us.  And the hotel foods and foods in the functions of materialistic people may also have the one or two of above prohibited items.  So, as far as possible, avoid eating in hotels.

In brief, eat only the things offered to Krishna.  This will give us natural restriction in not eating those food stuff that are not offerable to Lord.

And, the junk foods cause many problems in our body like piles, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.

(9) FOOD IN THE HOUSE OF MATERIALISTIC PEOPLE:

We are already on the path of devotion. If we take food from the non devotees and materialistic people, their material consciousness will affect us and we too will become more materialistic. So, we should avoid food from them.

(10) ANY FOOD THAT WAS NOT OFFERED TO THE LORD KRISHNA:

Though the food was cooked by you, it will contain some karmic vibrations of many people because the grain production and storage and supply involves the participation of many people.  Every person passes some kind of vibrations. So, a food that was not offered to Krishna is a karmic food. To avoid this and to show our love and gratitude to Krishna, we should offer the delicious food prepared by us to Krishna first and then honour the same as  Krishna Prasadam.

THE FOODS THAT CAN BE EATEN BY THE DEVOTEES!

We can not offer all the above eight types of foods to Krishna. We should offer only satva guna dominated foods to Krishna.  So, we are advised to take other food stuffs except those mentioned above and the food that does not contain the above mentioned products.

Even these permissible vegetarian foods should be first offered to Krishna and then honoured.

The devotees can take good quantity of fruits, green vegetables, milk, grains, etc., that can be offered to Krishna and then honoured.

The food should,be prepared for Krishna, not for you. When you prepare for Krishna, you should try your best to make the preparation delicious. Prepare only what Krishna likes, not what you like.

These regulations will make Krishna happy and make your consciousness filled with Krishna because of the reduction of karma transfer through food.

  1. Hare Krishna Prabhu ji.I just read this of your posts and found it absolutely true. I too want to lead a satvik life but there are huge problems in front of me for I live far from my family alone and have to eat in restaurants. Though I abstain from non vegetarian dishes I am not able to avoid onion, garlic, etc. When I think of avoiding such things and coming to satvik foods like fruits, raw veggies, etc.things go worse because my health weakens and blood-sugar drops down!!Pls explain if there is any way out? Krishna has done a lot of miracles for me I love him a lot..In fact He is the one because whom I’m living a happy life..but as you know this happiness is fleeting till there is no time for Him!I am not able to give him time I don’t even perform arati, etc because of my hectic schedule..All I do is one round of mahamantra chanting and read Bhagavad-Gita. Kindly help me.Regards.Hare Krishna
