DHAAN & DHARMA – DIFFERENCE – STORY!
What is the difference between dhaan and dharma?
In the Mahabharata, Karna’s soul after leaving his body went to heaven after praying his father Sun God and the Lord Shiva.
Sun God had a great pain mixed with doubt in his heart.
Who to ask?
Who will explain clearly?
The heat of the sun increased in confusion and anger.
Seeing this, Lord Shiva camebefore him.
“Sun, What’s wrong with your mind?” Shiva asked.
“The lord! I accepted that it was fate for my son Karna to be killed in the war, who had accumulated merits by performing various dhaan and dharma. But, By donating all virtues to Krishna, he becomes even more virtuous. Then how did he die? Isn’t this unfair?” asked the Sun God.
Lord Shiva smiled.
“Sun… It is the temptation that has made you raise this question. Listen… Dhaan (Donation) is giving to others what they need after he asks or after knowing thru others about his condition. This is dhaan, ie, donation.
This dhaan is not added to Punya account. Because.. it is the duty of a king to give to the people who have nothing or who is unable to earn. It is also the duty of every man to give dhaan.
But, dharma means knowing one’s condition and helps even before he asks. This is the Punya. Giving something to a hungry person after asking for, it is dhaan. It is dharma to give food or what he needs even without asking.
Karna is the one who earned merits by performing dharmas. But Krishna received all the merits by asking for them as dhaan and not as dharma.
Karna also became an ordinary man after giving away all the virtues.
That is why death approached him so easily. Got it now?”
The sun god thanked and worshiped Lord Shiva.
MORAL:
Donating even without asking is called dharma.
Donating after asking is called dhaan.
