BHISMA PANCHAKA (or) VISHNU PANCHAKA – COMPLETE DETAILS!

Bhisma Panchaka is observed glorifying Bhisma deva during Kartika month.

What is called Bhisma Panchaka?

(1) The last 5 days of the month of Karttika are observed as the Bhisma Panchaka or the Vishnu Panchaka.

(2) Grandfather Bhisma fasted for these five days, preparing to give up his life.

(3) Hari Bhakti Vilasa states that if one is capable, one should observe fasting from certain foodstuffs on the Bhishma-panchaka for the pleasure of the Lord. This is optional.

“The fast should begin by remembering Bhismadeva on the Ekadasi day and should end on Purnima [the full moon].

(4) Padma Purana states that one pleases the Lord and makes spiritual advancement by such austerities.

OFFERINGS TO THE LORD DURING BHISMA PANCHAKA

(5) GARUDA PURANA STATES:

Following flowers to be offered to the Deities/ Pictures during the five days of Bhisma Panchaka.

(6) First day:  Padma (lotus) flowers to the feet of the Lord.

(7) Second day: Bilva (wood-apple) leaves of the thigh of the Lord.

(8) Third day: Gandha (scents) to the navel of the Lord.

(9) Fourth day: Java flower to the shoulders of the Lord.

(10) Fifth day: Malati flower to the head (siro-desa) of the Lordship.

(11) If possible, One should take bath in Ganges or the other holy rivers every day & offer tarpana 3 times for Bhismadeva by saying the following mantra:

om vaiyaghra padya gotray
samkrti pravaraya ca
aputraya dadamyetat
salilam bhismavarmane

(13) ARGHYA:

Vasunamavataraya
santanoratmajaya ca
arghyam dadami bhismaya
ajanma brahmacarine

(14) PRANAM:

om bhismah santanavo birah
satyavadi jitendriyah
abhiradbhiravapnatu
putrapautrocitam kriyam

(15) BENEFITS OF OBSERVING BHISMA PANCHAKA:  By observing these days of Bhishma Panchaka fasting, one gets the benefit of all the four chaturmasya fasting if one had been unable to follow the same.

(16) Since it may be unable to follow whole day fasting for five days, they can observe fast between sun rise and sun set.

(17) Those who are aged, who takes tablets, who are taking regular treatments/ medicines and advised by the doctors not to observe fasts should abstain from fasting.
