PRIDE IN CHARITY – STORY
Yuthishtra is Compassionate towards poor; A generous donor. Once upon a time, Yuthishtra himself became slightly proud about his generosity.
Krishna, who understood that, thought that He should not leave him like this. He decided to correct him…
One day, he came looking for Yuthishtra and said, ‘Come, we shall go out for sometime…’
Both were going together for long.
Lastly, Padal Loga (Lower Planets) came.
At that time, that underworld was ruled by Mahabali.
Mahabali was very great Emperor in giving Charity and his hospitality
He was appreciated by the whole world.
Yuthishtra went to a house and say, “Give me some water”.
That house Lady gave water in Golden pot.
For Yuthishtra, this was a surprise.
He understood the prosperity of that country.
After that, Yuthishtra and Krishna left for meeting King Mahabali
They went to the palace.
Addressing the king, Krishna introduced Yuthishtra to the king Mahabali like this:
“He, Yuthishtra, is very famous in charity. Every day he gives alms to 500 people.”
Hearing that, Mahabali covered both his ears with his hands.
Then, Mahabali told:
‘Don’t let that message you say fall on my ears. I am not ready to listen to such a person. Here in my kingdom, no matter how hard I try to give charity, there is no one to receive it. There is no one here who is in a position to receive charity as all are living a comfortable life. But if you say that Yuthishtra offers charity and food to 500 people everyday, it means that there are lakhs of poor people in his country. From this, it is clear how he rules.”
Mahabali further said, ‘I’m not even ready to know about someone who is keeping his people begging.’
On hearing this, Yuthishtra was ashamed; His pride also disappeared.
The lesson this story gives us is: “Never give charity for pride. Create a situation that does not require charity’
