Red Loincloth of Guruvayur Krishna – Story

Red Loincloth of Guruvayur Krishna – Story

Loincloth is a piece of cloth (Kaupin) worn to hide their private parts by men. A Red Loincloth is worn by Guruvayur Krishna during nights.

Once upon a time, there was an old woman.

She was an ardent devotee of Guruvayur Krishna.

She used to go to the shrine of Guruvayur Krishna every morning and evening, have darshan, and worship Him with devotion.

One day, when she was going home after the darshan, it rained heavily with a strong wind.

There were no street lights in those days. She lost her way in the darkness.

She was walking with great anxiety, chanting the names of Guruvayur Krishna.

Then, a small boy appeared in front of her and said, “Grandma, don’t worry. I will take you home.”

Both of them got soaked in the rain. They reached Grandma’s house while talking.

When she reached home, she thanked the boy and asked, “What is your name?”

He replied, “Gopala.”

The old woman said, “I want to give you something for the help you have done. What do you want?”

He said, “My clothes are soaked in the rain. Just give me a piece of your sari.”

When she looked around, she saw a red sari. She tore a small piece from it and gave it to him. He took it and went away.

The next morning, when the door of the sanctum was opened for Nirmalya Darshan, everyone was surprised to see a red colored sari tied to the idol.

They were surprised to see how Krishna, who had been well decorated the first day, could now appear with such a piece of sari.

Krishna’s divine beauty was enchanting everyone.

The old woman, who had come for darshan as usual, was also happy and told everyone about the events of the previous day.

She also showed her slightly torn sari.

Everyone was amazed to see that the torn part was the Red Loincloth of Guruvayur Krishna.

The old woman was overjoyed at this divine drama and the grace that Guruvayur Krishna had bestowed upon her.

Since that day, it has been the custom to offer red Loincloth to Sri Guruvayur Krishna at night.
