A rich man went to a Rishi and said:
‘I have everything. Peace is not the only one I have. What should I do to get it?”
He said, “Well… I will tell you a story. There was a man named Kuppusamy with an old hat. Seeing that, everyone made fun of him. His friend kept telling him to change it. He had a lot of money, but he didn’t have a mind to spend it. He said ‘Let us see’ and left.
One day, Kuppusamy decided to make a lot of money by buying a perfume bottle from an old bottle shop, pouring it into small bottles and stocking it at his window-side to sell and earn more.
One day, Kuppusamy and his friend both bathed in the pool.
There, Kuppusamy took off his hat and placed it on the bank of the river.
A judge who came to bathe in the pool, also kept his hat near Kuppusamy’s hat.
When Kuppusamy returned, he went home happy to find a new hat and not the old one.
The judge, who came to the shore after bathing, looked for his hat and saw Kuppusami’s old hat on the side, and went to Kuppusamy’s house with anger.
There, the judge found his hat and hence fined Kuppusamy a huge sum as fine.
Kuppusamy, who was very irritated for getting fined, threw his old hat out. It broke all the perfume bottles he had kept for sale. This caused loss of money for him.
Then, he threw the old hat into the town’s drinking water pond.
The people did not get fresh water in the town. The corporation plumber found that Kuppusamy’s hat was blocking te water pipe and hence the authorities fined him.
Giving up his desire for the hat, he set it on fire inside the house and threw the fired hat outside.
In no time, the fire department chased after him. Due to his thrown hat, the nearby huts caught fire.
He had to run away.
Had Kuppusamy thrown the old hat when his fiend advised, he would not have faced this much of problems because of that old hat.
Everyone has their favorite old hats like anger, jealousy, ego, etc. You will get peace if you throw them as soon as your friend tells you to throw it.
