Can we become God if we purify ourselves from attachments?
A Girl devotee (Name hidden) asked like this:
Anna I have one doubt. we have soul. we are trace of lord on every quality lord has. does this prove if we stop our sense gratification, we too can become god?? has the lord made us with some limit or we have made limit for ourselves ??

This is what mayavadis say: “You are god….I am god…..all are gods”
This is not perfectly right. Because, we have all the qualities of Lord Krishna, but, in very very very limited quantities. So, we and Krishna are qualitatively SIMILAR, but, quantitatively very different, ie, we are inferior.
(THINKING KRISHNA AT THE TIME OF DEATH TO GO BACK TO HIM! READ HERE!)
Sun is a big star. Sun rays too have the qualities of sun. But, sun rays can not be equal to sun in QUANTITY, ie, MAGNITUDE OF CAPABILITIES. Isn’t it?
Similarly, we too have the qualities of Krishna to some (minute) extent. But, we are not equal to Krishna in quantity, ie, magnitude.
So, your first question is ruled out. We can not become god.
However, we can increase that quantity of Godly qualities to a better level.
Many think that we have lost part of the godly qualities/ potency just because we are in material trap. It is not correct.
Of course, if we come out of material attachments, the magnitude of our Godly qualities will increase to good extent.
For example, Some exalted devotees, rishis who are pure have more spiritual power and even some chaste women have more spiritual power.
However, it is not up to the level equal to the power of Krishna. That means, increasing our spiritual power to the level of Krishna is not possible. It can not happen.
So, the result is: If we desert material attachments, we may become pure and spiritually more powerful. And, we can go to Krishna and live with Him and serve Him. But, we can never become equal to Krishna in the quantity of the qualities.
We can enter into Krishna’s kingdom only with the mindset as a servant of Krishna, not with the “equality” mindset with Krishna.

We have not limited ourselves purposefully. Since we have material attachments, we are trapped into this material planet.
All Jivatmas are limited in their spiritual capacity until they are trapped into the material planets. With this much of the contamination of material attachments, we can’t be lifted to the spiritual planets.
If these Jivathmas become pure from material attachments, then, they get more purity from material attachments and hence increased spiritual power to the level that will take them to God, ie, Krishna.
There, they will be serving the Lord.
So, Compared to Krishna, we are always naturally limited in capacity wherever we are – earth or heaven or Brahmaloka.
Even in Krishna’s kingdom, we have limited capacity and also limited freedom of serving, not becoming equal to Krishna. It can never be.
So, we can’t become God though we purify ourselves from attachments. We can just increase our Spiritual power, but can never become equal to Krishna in the magnitude of qualities.
