Misunderstanding Spoils Relations- Story!
After the passing of a jewellery merchant, his family fell into dire straits. They reached a point where they did not even have enough money to provide for their daily meals.
One day, the merchant’s wife called her son, placed a sapphire-studded necklace in his hands, and said:
“Son, take this and go to your uncle’s shop. Sell it to him and ask him to give us some money.”
The son took the necklace and arrived at his uncle’s shop.
His uncle examined the necklace thoroughly.
He then said to the boy: “My dear nephew, tell your mother this… that the market conditions are very poor right now. If she waits and sells this a little later, she will fetch a much better price for it.”
Then, to help with the family’s expenses, he gave the boy some money.
He also added, “Starting tomorrow, come to the shop, sit with me, and learn the trade.”
Consequently, from the very next day, the boy began going to the shop daily. He started learning the craft there, and he mastered the techniques of how to inspect and appraise diamonds and gemstones.
Before long, he transformed into a highly knowledgeable expert. He became a specialist in analyzing and appraising diamonds.
People traveled from far and wide to seek his expertise in appraising their diamonds.
One day, his uncle said to him: “Nephew, go and fetch that necklace
from your mother now! Tell her… that the market conditions have improved significantly, and she will now receive an excellent price for it.”
As soon as he received the necklace from his mother, the young man examined it himself.
He discovered that it was a fake. He began to wonder: “Why did my uncle—despite being such an expert—not reveal this to me?”
Leaving the necklace at home, he returned to the shop.
His uncle asked: “Did you not bring the necklace?”
He replied, “Uncle, it is a fake. But why did you hide this from me?”
Then his uncle explained:
“When you first brought the necklace to me, had I told you then that it was a fake, you might have suspected that I was saying so intentionally. For at that time, you were going through a difficult situation. Today, however—
since you have gained this knowledge through your own experience—
you now know with absolute certainty that this necklace is indeed a fake. At that moment, I felt that preserving the thread of our relationship—ensuring it did not snap—was far more valuable and important
than simply speaking the truth.”
Without the benefit of experience, we often dismiss everything we see,
think, and perceive in this world as being “wrong.”
Such misunderstandings inflict severe damage upon our relationships,
eventually leading to their breakdown.
Consequently, our own lives are left isolated and vulnerable to collapse.
Let us live our lives safeguarding the threads of our relationships, ensuring they never snap!
