A miracle by Tulasidas – Story!
This is a great miracle by Tulasidas.
A gentle dawn mist lay over the banks of the River Ganges.
The city of Kashi had not yet fully awakened.
Yet, the sound of the temple bell at the shrine of Lord Vishwanath had already reached the heavens.
The glow of lamps floating on the waters of the Ganges appeared like a divine bridge connecting darkness and day.
In a small ashram situated on the outskirts of that holy city, the name of Rama was being chanted ceaselessly.
“Sri Ram… Jai Ram… Jai Jai Ram…”
Every syllable of that sacred name dissolved into the air, purifying the minds of those nearby.
Seated at the heart of the ashram was Tulsidas, a towering genius of devotional literature.
Regarded by many as an embodiment of the sage Valmiki, this great soul spent his entire life singing the glories of Sri Rama.
To him, Rama was not merely a deity…
He was life itself. Breath. The heartbeat.
Hundreds of people visited Tulsidas’s ashram every day.
Some came seeking wisdom.
Some sought peace of mind.
Others wished to learn the path of devotion.
Yet, he had but one message for everyone:
“There is no medicine greater than the name of the Lord.”
It was one afternoon.
An Annadhan ceremony (distribution of food) was about to take place at the ashram.
Large leaf-plates were spread out.
Devotees sat in rows.
The aroma of ghee wafted from the kitchen.
Everyone waited for the meal.
Just then…
A voice was heard from the ashram entrance.
“Ram Jai Sitaram…!”
There was pain in that voice.
There was yearning. There was a sense of anguish.
Tulsidas rose and went to the entrance.
The man standing there presented a pitiful sight.
Soiled clothes. A weary face. Tears in his eyes.
Standing with folded hands, he spoke in a trembling voice:
“Swami… I am a great sinner. I have killed a Brahmin. The world loathes me. There is no place for me anywhere. But today, I am starving. Could I get a meal?”
Many who heard these words grimaced.
“He should not be let in.”
“He is a murderer.”
“How can he sit in a holy ashram?”
They began to murmur.
But Tulsidas stood calmly.
He looked directly into the man’s eyes.
What he saw there was not a criminal.
He saw a soul, melted with remorse, fully aware of its sin.
“Come inside, my son.” He said gently.
Everyone was shocked.
He seated the man alongside the others.
He ordered that the same meal be served to him as well.
Immediately, some stood up.
“Swami! How is this fair? You have seated a murderer as an equal among us?” They asked.
Tulsidas smiled.
“What did he say when he arrived here?” He asked.
“He said, ‘Ram, Jai Sita-Ram’.” They replied.
“In that case, his sins have already been burnt away.” He said.
Everyone was puzzled.
Tulsidas continued:
“What happens if you throw dry cotton into a fire?”
“It turns to ash.” They replied.
“Likewise… The name of Rama, chanted with genuine heartfelt anguish, burns away the sins of many lifetimes to ashes.” He said.
But some were not satisfied with that answer.
“Then prove it.”
One person challenged him.
“If the power of your Rama-nama is real… Make this stone Nandi eat this offering.” He said.
Those words shocked everyone present.
But Tulsidas did not get angry. Nor did he argue.
He calmly took the food on a plate.
Looking towards the sky,
“Rama…”
He chanted once.
Then, he walked slowly.
Hundreds of people followed him.
They all reached the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
Inside the temple, Lord Nandi sat silently, as always.
That stone-carved figure remained motionless.
Tulsidas placed the plate before Nandi.
He closed his eyes. He folded his hands in prayer.
He prayed with tear-filled eyes.
“Oh Kashi Vishwanath… I have not come to prove anything. The world must know the glory of Your name. They must realize that true devotion transcends any lifetime or any sin.”
He pleaded.
Silence prevailed for a few seconds.
Everyone watched, holding their breath.
Just then… A miracle occurred.
A tremor ran through the body of the motionless stone Nandi.
A deep breath escaped from its nostrils.
The entire temple vibrated.
Nandi’s eyes seemed to come alive.
Slowly… Slowly… It rose to a standing position.
The people were astounded by the sight.
Some began to weep. Some trembled with fear.
Some fell to the ground and prostrated.
Nandi slowly walked towards the leaf held by Tulsidas.
Then… Right before everyone’s eyes, it began to eat the Prasadam.
It consumed everything, leaving not even a scrap of the leaf behind.
A few moments later… It returned to its spot and sat down.
It turned back into stone.
But the hearts of those present were no longer the same.
Overcome with emotion, everyone who witnessed the miracle fell at Tulsidas’s feet, shedding tears.
“Please forgive us.”
MORAL OF THIS MIRACLE BY TULASIDAS:
Holy Names are more powerful in Kaliyuga than the Lord Himself. Because the Lord’s Names give the Lord Himself. A miracle by Tulasidas
