Who performs the world maintenance when Devas & Gods sleep?
A male devotee (Name hidden) asked like this:
“I hope that you are well. After reading the story of Padma Ekadashi / Deva Shayani Ekadahi, I have some questions in my mind related to it. Can you please explain about this point?
During this period where all the devas sleep and the Lord sleeps also, how this world is maintained?
If some auspicious event, for example marriage is performed during the period of the sleep, what is the result for this event?
The temple is also open and there are some ceremony which is perform. Is all this ceremony is going in vain?”
REPLY:
This is an Interesting Question. When I started to type, the contents went long.
When the night comes for the Gods, they go to sleeping state.
All the creations also go to the UNMANIFESTED/ SLEEPING STATE.
(How Origin of Creations is Krishna’s Body as said by Bhagavatham? READ HERE!)
That means, all the creations are kept in dormant, frozen state.
All their karmic new births are kept under suspension. Everyone’s soul and the karma carried by the souls are kept frozen till the Brahma and gods wake up again.
The entire creation, spanning the worlds of Brahma, Indra, and other regions right to the smallest item in earth is subject to change, that is, birth, growth and decay and death and then rebirth.
Sastras also have quantified Time in terms of the yugas. There are four yugas, the Satya, the Treta, the Dwapara and the Kali. The time duration of each of them is fixed and the total of all these figures is known as one thousand divine years. To the human mind, it is a multiple of several thousands of human years.
Each Yuga is distinct in its moral character. Virtue is dominant in Satya, and in the Treta, Dwapara and Kali yugas that follow, sin and moral degradation slowly enter and the present Kali Yuga is the worst, where conflict, sin and adharma dominate.
(HOW KRISHNA CREATED ALL THE CREATIONS AND LIVING BEINGS? READ HERE!)
One day of Brahma of a thousand divine years is called KALPA and it is the period of cosmic manifestation (existence of creation) and one night of Brahma of equal length of day time is the period of non-manifestation (non existence of creations).
Lord Brahma’s one day is called a KALPA;
The creation of Brahma is called VIKALPA;
The creation of the total creation is called MAHAKALPA.
Each day of Brahma is a duration of one thousand divya yugas. A divya yuga comprises of the total of four yugas (4 yugas x 1000).
The same duration comprises his night.
Since Brahma is also a demigod, all the celestial bodies too have similar time calculation according to the world in which they are living.
No Time factor in the Spiritual sky alone.
A detailed calculation of life time of Brahma:
No. of years of 4 yugas:
Satya Yuga =1,728,000;
Treta Yuga=1,296,000;
Dwapara Yuga=8,64,000;
Kali Yuga=4,32,000.
If these 4 yugas rotate 1000 times, it is the ONE DAY TIME (A KALPA) of Brahma! Same 1000 times of rotation is his ONE NIGHT!
(CREATIONS BY KRISHNA – 4: MATERIAL WORLDS – CREATION & ANNIHILATION! READ HERE!)
Calculate like this:
1728000+1296000+864000+432000 = Total 43,20000;
Now, 43,20000 x 1000 x 2= Bramha’s One day + Night, ie, 8.64 billion Earth Years!
Multiply this by 365 to get one year of brahma and then multiply by 100.
You get the life time of brahma, that works out to nearly 311 trillion and 40 billion years.
After this life time, this Brahma dies & a New Brahma is appointed by Krishna!
Present Brahma has completed 50 years of age!
Let it be. Let us now come to your question:
One day of Brahma and celestials are this much long.
One year of earth is equal to One day of higher worlds.
But, In Brahma Loga, it is still too high as explained above.
More the height – More the length of a day for the celestial bodies living at that height.
For example, the time in Moon and Mars are different.
Similarly, Time in the Pitru Loka and Brahma loka are different.

With this understanding, Let me take your every question one by one:
(1) During this period where all the devas sleep and the Lord sleeps also, how this world is maintained?
There will be no world and living beings when the devas and demigods sleep.
Since each Loka has different time calculations, when the celestials of one loka sleeps, those in another loka will be awake.
So, those who have day time will take care of maintenance duties.
This is like three shifts for the workers in the companies on earth. Morning shift, Afternoon shift and Night shift.
When the night shift employee works, others may sleep at night. When other work in day time, night shift worker sleeps.
Thus, maintenance will go on.
When the night time of Brahma comes after 1000 Chatur yugas, all the creations are also taken to NON EXISTENT but SLEEPING STATE.
When Brahma wakes up, the creations are released again.
This is the system.

(2) If some auspicious event, for example marriage is performed during the period of the sleep, what is the result for this event?
Since we too will not exist when Brahma sleeps, there will be no events – neither auspicious nor inauspicious.
All will be sleeping in frozen state as if we don’t exist.
But, during the day time of Brahma or other gods, the world maintenance will still be going on.
Our prayers are transmitted to the Supreme Lord Krishna through the network and are directly taken care of Krishna.
For example, the TV stations will be transmitting something at midnight, 1am, 3am, etc. The night shift staff will not have direct relay works. The already recorded and programed and scheduled programs will be automatically transmitted thru computerized automation.
Creations are also automated maintenance. Those demigods who will be awake in their worlds will take care of the supervision of maintenance.
Since there will be no power cut, Satellite failures, the automation of Krishna’s creations are perfect without break.

(3) The temple is also open and there are some ceremony which is perform. Is all this ceremony is going in vain?
Because of the automation of Krishna’s creations and the available waking servants, the benefits of the ceremonies are automatically recorded, transmitted to Krishna and the results are okayed by Krishna as said by Krishna Himself.
Though Shiva will be in the very higher world, His servants will be serving from so many worlds of so many ranges. So, they will always be transmitting the benefits of our rituals.
Even from earth, we are serving the Gods, demigods and Krishna. Similarly, there will be servants in the worlds of different heights/ ranges.
Since day and night times are different in these worlds, there will be no issues in the affairs and maintenance of all the creations.
Krishna’s arrangements are flawless. Isn’t it?
(4) Because of the sleep of the Lord, does this mean that there are certain hours that we can not go near him. For example, at house, if i come home late, after 22h, simple arati can not be performed?
Compared with the day time of devas and Brahma deva, our whole life time is just a small fraction.
Krishna is always functioning and He will always be available to access.
When He comes to earth, He follows the system of this planet. That’s all.
Though Krishna is the source of rishis, He accepted a rishi as His guru honouring the system of earth.
However, the administration of Krishna never sleeps. It is always connected with the living beings.
This is like the connections of mobile networks remain connected even when we are sleeping. Those networks function even after we die.
Similarly, if the devas in one world is sleeping, the devas in the higher worlds will be in the awaken state.
And, in the Spiritual world, No time factor and hence no night or day. All time illuminated planets and the bodies of the inhabitants are also spiritual. So, they are not in need of sleep.
Hope these well assembled details has cleared your doubts on the world maintenance when Devas & Gods sleep!
