Even the Lord and avatars followed great celibacy as students and learnt the science of God by serving their gurus.
Lord Krishna served the feet of His Guru Sandeepani.
Lord Rama had Guru Vasishtha.
Lord Jesus was done a ceremony of initiation by John on the banks of the river Jordan.
Even Devas (celestials) have Brihaspati as their Guru.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER GETTING DIKSHA FROM A GURU?
When a guru gives diksha to a disciple, he touches him and give a mala to chant. He accepts that person as a disciple within his heart.
When he touches the disciple thinking him as his disciple, some parts of his spiritual power gets transferred to the disciple as these powers are in the form of electromagnetic waves that can be transmitted from a person to person.
This method of transmitting spiritual powers is termed Sakti-sanchar.
In Sakti-sanchar, a certain spiritual vibration of the guru is actually transferred to the mind of the disciple.
The Guru can transform the disciple even by a look, a touch, a thought or a word, or mere willing.
